Summer is in full swing with temperatures inching closer to triple digits each day and heat indexes in many areas already there.
Each year, between 5 million and 10 million workers are exposed to heat-related illnesses, according to OSHA, who recently held safety stand-downs across the Southeast on the subject.
We’ve reported on tips to beat the heat before, and now, via a report from our sister site Total Landscape care, OSHA has developed a great tool for staying on top of the heat index and when to start implementing those tips.
The OSHA Heat Safety Tool app, available now for iPhone, Android and Blackberry, calculates the heat index for outdoor workers and supervisors and then displays a risk level based on that calculation.
With another click you can read tips related to that risk level including topics such as drinking enough fluids, scheduling rest breaks, how to monitor fellow workers for symptoms of heat-related illness and what to do in an emergency.
