Led by a slowdown in the under 40HP tractor segment, U.S. tractor sales in May saw a slight dip in overall sales for the month, compared to May 2020.
According to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) Flash Report, sales of tractors in the under 40HP segment were off nearly 9 percent compared to May 2020. Weighed by a slowdown in the largest tractor sales segment (by volume), total 2WD tractor sales were down a little more than 4 percent compared to May of last year.
Sales in the 40HP to under 100HP segment were up 6.7 percent for the month, AEM reports, and sales in the 100+ HP segment were up nearly 29 percent. Year to date, total 2WD tractor sales remain well above year-ago totals as well as the five-year average.
AEM reports sales in the 4WD segment also saw a significant increase, up more than 62 percent compared to May of last year, and for the year are up nearly 20 percent.
While total farm tractor sales were off nearly 4 percent, they remain more than 25 percent ahead of last year’s pace.
