Komatsu HM460-6 Haul Truck Specs

  • Engine Power: 518 hp at 1,700 rpm
  • Bed Capacity, Heaped: 25.7 cubic meters
  • Max. Payload: 42 metric tons

Komatsu’s completely redesigned HM460-6 articulated dump truck comes packed with a new high-output powertrain, an advanced traction control system and redesigned cab.

In the video above, Komatsu Director of Products and Service Bruce Boebel gives us an overview of the ADT, while Chief Technology Officer Mike Gidaspow provides a closer look at the Smart Quarry technology features available.

The HM460-6 replaces the HM400-5 in Komatsu’s lineup, touting:

  • 9% increase in horsepower and 23% increase in torque
  • Up to 12% less fuel consumption
  • 16% increase in glass area, improved premium seat and intuitive monitor and operator controls
  • Extended maintenance intervals for reduced total cost of ownership

It is powered by the 518-horsepower DBA127 diesel engine paired with a Komatsu-designed nine-speed transmission for increased torque at lower engine speeds and strong, smooth acceleration, improved hill climbing and efficient power delivery across varying hauling conditions, the company says.

A traction control system works in conjunction with inter-axle and cross-axle differential locks, continuously monitors wheel speed and slip, automatically applying brake force to individual wheels when traction loss is detected.

Komatsu reduced the weight of the truck by more than 5,000 pounds by using higher strength, lighter steel. The 165,126-pound HM460-6 has a 46.3-ton payload, up from 44.2 tons on the previous model.

An all-new cab design increases operator visibility and comfort, as well as provides new assistance features. Operators will find a higher-capacity air conditioning system, a new deluxe air-suspension seat, a new flap-retracting steering column, a foldable trainer seat, a larger front wiper and retractable sun visors.  An 8-inch machine monitor and 10-inch sub-monitor display payload data, machine information and rearview camera feeds.

All of Komatsu’s quarrying equipment, including the HM460-6, can be equipped with Smart Quarry Site fleet management and analytics suite, providing real-time jobsite tracking and productivity metrics.

Smart Quarry Autonomous unlocks self-driving capabilities on trucks in quarry environments. The OEM-agnostic solution is retrofittable on Komatsu and non-Komatsu equipment by authorized Komatsu dealers.

Here we have the new. 466. It's an all new ground up design. This is based on years of customer feedback.

Starting off with the front of the truck, we have the new DBA 127 engine that has an EGR less engine. It's designed to give full performance out of the engine. We get very little particulate matter getting into the DPF. The DPF exchange goes from 4500 to 8000 hours. Very high horsepower. This is a 518 horsepower on this truck.

And also when we go back in the truck here, we have an all new design manufactured Comanche transmission. It's a nine speed transmission. So coupled with the high horsepower engine and the transmission, it gives us great efficiency for the truck. Now, coming back in the truck here, we have the body. Back here we have a new structure for the mainframe.

We looked at ways to reduce weight from the truck. We have reduced over 5,000 pounds out of this truck compared to its predecessor. To do that, we use higher strength, lighter steel in those areas. Going up to the top here we have the all new cab design. So this is a four pillar cab, about 43% better visibility, less blind spots, 16% more glass.

That operator is important. So we want them very comfortable. So it's an all new suspension seat eat it and ventilated all new cab environment. As far as the controls are all on the right side for the operator. We added a lot of automated features like semi-auto dump awaiting brake. We have cruise control or automaker tartar system on that.

Now, we know these trucks work in extreme conditions, knowing that we have locking side to side axles on these and a great traction control system. When the wheels starts to spin, it'll break that side and shifted over to the other side to keep you going, keep your momentum going with the truck. So a lot of things to talk about on this.

00:01:49:06 - 00:02:09:12

Bruce Boebel

We did extended service intervals. We're trying to reduce that TCO for customers. We do that. For example the fuel filters are now 1000 hour

interval over a 500. We've extended the hydraulic the transmission oil interval also the coolant. We're trying to reduce the amount of times the customer has to touch the machine to maintain it. So there's a lot of things we put into that to make it better.

Cost per ton over the life of the truck.

00:02:12:13 - 00:02:39:24

Mike Gidaspow

I'm Mike from North America. I'm just going to talk about some of the technology features that we have on our quarry equipment, including the 466, which is brand new at the show. So any of our quarry equipment can be equipped with a smart quarry site, which you see behind me here. Some of the examples of it basically helps you with job site tracking, productivity, getting to see your trucks, where they are live, and getting to improve your operations.

00:02:40:01 - 00:03:10:07

Mike Gidaspow

We also have Smart Quarry Autonomous at this show, which is on our HD 605 and our Was 700 can be equipped on our 460 as well. This is an autonomous solution custom made for the quarry market. So quarry is obviously different from mining. You've got smaller sites, smaller trucks, fewer trucks, and we need to be able to make sure that the autonomous trucks work well with the people on the job sites, and that interaction is so important.

00:03:10:07 - 00:03:32:14

Mike Gidaspow

So we've really considered that and how we developed the site. The site Smart Quarry Autonomous is made to work with the loader operators worth the crusher, where somebody in a pickup truck, rather than with a command center, and really helps you bring autonomy to your quarry in a more simple manner. So they're available through your dealer to be easily installed.

00:03:32:15 - 00:03:49:12

Mike Gidaspow

It's retrofitted on noncommercial equipment as well. We realize that sites might have more than two machines, and we want to make it easy to enact. We help you. Training will help you make sure that all your people are aware of how the solutions work, and all of our distributors are trained as well.
