Caltrans seeks comments on California Transportation Plan 2040

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking public comments on California Transportation Plan 2040 (CTP 2040), the long-term transportation plan for the state.

“The public can play a key role in the long-term vision we are creating for California’s transportation system,” says Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “Our population is growing, the way we live and move is changing, our transportation system needs evolving, and therefore our game plan needs to be forward-thinking.”

One of the major goals of CTP 2040 is reducing the state’s greenhouse gas emissions to 80 percent below the 1990 levels by the year 2050.

“Caltrans seeks public input to help ensure the CTP 2040 is fully consistent with the department’s mission of delivering a low-carbon transportation system capable of meeting our goals of mobility, safety and sustainability,” the agency says.

The strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions include “demand management” strategies, such as promoting telecommuting and increasing the number of carpoolers and commuters involved in car sharing. The plan also calls for “mode shift“ concepts aimed at converting people to transit options.

CTP 2040 is available at www.californiatransportationplan2040.org and comments can be submitted there or via email to [email protected]. The deadline for comments is March 29.
