Manitowoc has launched its largest Grove all-terrain crane with the new 800-ton GMK8700.
Released in response to growing demand for heavy-lift solutions across infrastructure industrial projects, energy applications and other industries, according to Manitowoc, this new eight-axle carrier offers two boom options — 177 feet and 263 feet — each featuring Manitowoc’s Megaform design and interchangeable telescopic sections for tackling a variety of projects.
The GMK8700’s luffing jib extends up to 351 feet and features a single back mast and optional boom extensions. Contractors can add counterweight up to 385,000 pounds, made up of slabs that can also be used on Grove’s GMK6400, GMK6400-1 and GMK6450-1 models.
Additionally, the GMK8700 is the first Grove crane to offer Manitowoc’s Variable Position Counterweight technology, allowing operators to adjust its position for greater lifting capacity.
Manitowoc
Manitowoc’s self-rigging MegaWingLift capacity-enhancing system can be installed without an auxiliary crane for faster setup.
Manitowoc’s next-gen CCS 2.0 crane control system will also debut on the GMK8700, working with the onboard Grove Connect telematics system to improve diagnostics and provide clearer data and more intuitive troubleshooting. CCS 2.0 integrates with the MAXbase 2.0 variable outrigger positioning system for real-time lift capacity calculations and optimal setup guidance.
In the cab, operators get dedicated displays for the superstructure and carrier to boost situational awareness and efficiency.
The GMK8700 can travel with the boom carried over the front or mounted on a dolly behind the crane (depending on local regulations) and features Manitowoc’s MegaDrive system for smoother road travel and more precise maneuverability. Five of the GMK8700’s axles are driven, while the other two axle groups are separately optimized, one for road travel and the other for jobsite mobility.
Other features on the GMK8700 include:
- Manitowoc’s Megatrak suspension
- A removable rear outrigger box
- An adaptive electronic braking system
- Heated and ventilated seat
- Smartphone connectivity
The GMK8700's key service points are grouped for easier and quicker daily checks and have parts commonality with other Grove cranes in the current generation.
Grove’s all-terrain cranes now range from the 55-ton GMK3050-3 to the GMK8700, which surpasses the 550-ton GMK7550, previously the largest in Grove’s portfolio.
