Zoomlion says it has built the world’s tallest self-propelled straight-boom aerial work platform, with its all-new ZT82J.
The monster AWP has a maximum working height of 270 feet, with a rated load capacity of three levels: 507 pounds, 661 pounds and 1,001 pounds.
Product Manager He Jipeng said the biggest challenge in designing such a large machine came from balancing overall dimensions and product weight with the structural layout. “The R&D scope covered an ultra‑long, specially shaped lightweight boom, a box‑type turntable and a high‑capacity chassis, aiming to reduce weight while significantly improving structural rigidity to ensure bending and torsional resistance under 82.3‑meter lifting conditions and suppress platform sway.”
Weight reduction, overall dimensions and structural rigidity involved competing requirements, forcing the R&D team to go through over 10 rounds of simulations before developing the final multi-edge boom cross-section with multiple telescoping configurations.
ZoomlionThe polygonal boom design reduces the weight by more than 10%, increases vertical stiffness by 25% and increases torsion resistance by 20%, the company says.A double lifting cylinder layout also provides smooth lifting, better boom rigidity and less platform shakes. Additionally, the ZT82J is equipped with a 42.9-foot jib, expanding its working range and improving operational flexibility.

Once the boom design was solidified, the team focused on optimizing the turntable and chassis. “Simulation identified weak stress points, precisely optimized plate cross‑sections and reduced redundant steel while maintaining safety margins, achieving a lightweight upgrade, enhancing anti‑fatigue and anti‑overturning performance and completing a structural breakthrough for ultra‑high working height equipment,” he said.
X-shaped outriggers offer a larger working envelope, stronger off-road ability and better stability, while four-wheel steering with intelligent control coordinates movements of the outriggers during travel, steering and extension. Automatic matching of all-wheel steering angles keeps the ZT82J traveling in a straight line.
