Hitachi says its new ZX890LC-7H Bulk Excavation Configuration Excavator packs power for heavy-duty jobs while providing finesse for fine attachment control.

The 85-metric-ton excavator is powered by a 510-horsepower Isuzu 6WG1 diesel engine with 1,431 pound-feet of torque. It uses a selective catalytic reduction and diesel oxidation catalyst aftertreatment system, meaning a diesel particulate filter is not used, so no DPF maintenance and service required. The engine is paired with Hitachi’s HIOS V hydraulics for multifunction capability.

The shorter boom and arm geometry allows for faster truck loading and reduced cycle times for mining, quarrying and mass earthmoving applications, the company says. The bulk excavation boom is 23 feet 4 inches, while the arm is 9 feet 8 inches, both more than 4 feet shorter than the standard configuration.

“It’s a configuration that’s really focused on trying to move as much material as quickly as possible,” said Julie Fuller, director of product management and engineering for Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas. “It’s got a shorter boom and shorter arm that are heavy-duty reinforced structures to give you a lot of strength and power for that kind of application. It can take a larger bucket as well.”

“It’s a great piece of equipment when you’re trying to take those large piles of burden that are coming off the mining operation and put them back into the reclamation project,” adds Fuller. “Uptime is key and having high productivity with that large bucket and great hydraulic capability that can move the material quickly to really support the operation.”

Enhanced operator customization and fine tuning improve productivity, efficiency, fuel efficiency when performing tasks that require precision, the company says. Operators can also save flow and other settings for up to 16 attachment presets.

Three work modes — ECO, PWR and HP — match machine power to the task and jobsite conditions. Auto idle and auto shutdown control further enhance fuel efficiency.
