AASHTO announces Faces of Transportation photo contest winners

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) announced Thursday that two photos of workers at the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge won the Grand Prize and the People’s Choice Award in the association’s Faces of Transportation photo contest.

A judge selected the Grand Prize winner. California Department of Transportation Engineer Martin Chandrawinata received the award for his photo of an iron worker using a cutting torch while suspended from the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

The People’s Choice Award was decided by 19,000 online votes. Photographer Bill Hall received the award for his photo of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Engineer Matt Bruce inspecting the cable band installation near the top of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Winners in six categories were also selected:

  • Building the Future — State DOT: Photographer Bill Hall won for the same photo that received the People’s Choice Award.

  • Building the Future — Individual Winner: Photographer Karl Nielsen won for his photo of a worker cutting through reinforcing rebar in the concrete rubble of a demolished bridge on State Route 4 in Antioch, California.

  • Opening Communities — State DOT Winner: Photographer Cedric Mohr from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) won for his photo of GDOT Signal Technician Bobby Bryant inspecting a traffic light in District 7 on the south side of Atlanta.

  • Opening Communities — Individual Winner: Photographer Michael Ruggiero, Jr. won for his photo of a semi-truck driving on the Interstate.

  • Taking the Road Less Traveled — State DOT Winner: Photographer M. Bailey Watson from the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities, Marine Highway System won for his photo of icebergs being investigated from the safety of the Fast Rescue Boat deployed from the M/V Taku.

  • Taking the Road Less Traveled — Individual Winner: Photographer Karl Nielsen won for his photo of cyclists riding across an old bridge near Grafton, California.
