According to a report from WLKY TV in Louisville, 34-year-old TJ Warner was found dead at the bottom of the shaft around 7:30 p.m. July 16.
The investigation is ongoing but police and the subcontractor Warner was working for still don’t know how Warner fell into the shaft or how long he had been there before being found.
Warner had only been on the jobsite for two days. He leaves behind a wife and six children.
Falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry, with hundreds of workers dying each year and thousands more facing serious injuries. On June 5, a construction worker in New York City was killed and one other was injured after a fall down an elevator shaft.
The complex, called The Grove, is scheduled to open in late August. It’s not clear if the investigation around Warner’s death will delay work.
