The video below shows crews at work dismantling the old Tappan Zee Bridge. A floating super crane is being used to remove large sections of the bridge and place them on barges for transport, CBS New York reports.
Traffic has begun traveling on the first of two spans of the new Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge that will replace the Tappan Zee. Workers have begun demolishing the old bridge in order to connect the new bridge’s second span to land.
The crane has already removed a 235-foot-long section of the bridge and, according to the New York State Thruway Authority, will remove 20 similar sections over the next year, the largest of which will weigh more than 1,300 tons.
