Back in May, we launched our first photo contest for readers. Dubbed “Jobsite Pics,” we kept the conventions of the contest simple: we simply wanted to see where you work. In return, we received a ton of amazing entries and the challenge of choosing just 10 to feature here. The editors got together, talked it over and—just in time for Labor Day— we’re thrilled to present our 10 favorite photos below. Below each photo, you can read the story behind the shot. “I-64 was shut down for thirty days for repairs 7/5/2007. All of the bridge joints were removed and replaced,” writes David Weaver of Weaver’s Sawing & Sealing in Williamsburg, Kentucky. “Gohmann Asphalt was the prime contractor. We cut the walls and bridge deck joints for removal. I thought this was a beautiful shot of I-64 westbound over the river with the sun setting.”

Matthew Manning of Dirt Pro Excavation wrote, “This was taken in Rye, New Hampshire as we were rebuilding a 350-foot-long sea wall at a residential home. The machine is a Volvo EC240C. And if you look closely, you can see a plane coming in for a landing and the local airport.”
Jean Fassino of La May & Sons, Inc. wrote “We were repairing a seawall in Kings Point, NY with the waves splashing over the shoring.”
“Manitowoc 21000 and a bunch of old American cranes building new building in Dallas,” wrote Jason Nikl.
Cameron Bragg of Heavy Transport wrote, “Heavy Transport was hired to remove an old rail bridge and install a railroad bridge section for Nevada Department of Transportation and Union Pacific in 24 hours or less. The Southbound side of the 15 freeway was shut down for 24 hours starting at 10PM. Heavy Transport removed the existing section and set it on stands and quickly installed the new section within 17 hours.”
“Got a call requesting assistance, a farmer said he had gotten his excavator stuck. Traveled to the site with another excavator to find the machine close to floating,” wrote Jerry Rowland of Rowland Land Clearing. “Ended up digging out around the stuck excavator with ours, at which point the operator had a farmhand try to hook up a clevis to attach a cable to to pull it out. Extraction was successful with no damage to our machine. This photo is the quintessential ‘supervising’ moment for me.”
This lovely winter scene comes from John Walsh of Walsh Contracting Corp., who wrote, “Our brand new 390D digging sewer Dwarfs the D3C dozer In Plainville, Massachusetts.”
“While I was working in Abu dhabi for Boskalis Company in 2008 ,this machine sunk,” writes reader Usman Qayyu. “After 2 days struggle, we took it out.”
Lori La May of La May and Sons Inc. sent in this picture of her company’s Hurricane Sandy Clean up. “This is a picture of the sand stockpiled from the removal from the streets of Long Beach, NY and some of the crew and equipment used.” (Click the photo to enlarge.)
