Case Construction Equipment recently expanded its D Series mini excavator lineup with three new models: the CX30D, CX34D and CX38D.
In this episode of Iron Insider, we take a walkaround of the new machines, look at what sets each one apart and find out where they fit in the highly competitive 3-ton mini excavator market.
Case CE Product Promotional Specialist Andrew Sieker opens up the panels and gets behind the sticks to give us an in-depth look at the design and performance of these zero-tailswing models.
All three mini excavators are powered by a 24.4-horsepower Kubota diesel engine. Daily checks are accessible at ground level, and with the removal of two bolts, the cab can be flipped up for easy access to key service components.
Cab or open ROPS variants are available, both featuring an “automotive style” operator station with ergonomic pilot controls, adjustable suspension seat and all-around visibility to the jobsite.
Operators can run attachments with multifunction one- and two-way hydraulics and a second two-way auxiliary hydraulic circuit. An optional third hydraulic circuit and a constant-flow circuit enable the use of heavy-duty attachments, like mulchers.
While a pin-on bucket comes standard, the mini excavators are compatible with a wide range of attachments for digging, trenching, dirt moving, vegetation management and more.

Jordanne Waldschmidt
Hey, everyone. Welcome back to the Iron Insider. I'm your host, Jordanne Waldschmidt. Today we're here in Tomahawk, Wisconsin with Case construction equipment to get a closer look at three new mini excavators that round out the company's D series lineup the 30, 30 4D and 38 D. We'll take a walk around of the new machines, find out what sets each one apart, and see where they fit in the highly competitive three ton market.
00:00:30:15 - 00:00:38:19
Jordanne Waldschmidt
Joining us here today is case product promotional specialist Andrew Seeger. So let's get into it.
00:00:38:21 - 00:00:49:13
Andrew Sieker
Andrew, thanks so much for having us here today. Case already had a really robust lineup of many excavators. So what prompted you guys to launch these three new models.
00:00:49:14 - 00:01:09:24
Andrew Sieker
So these models represent 20% of the market share. So we need we had a hole that we needed to fill. So we came out with a 30 the 34 and the 38. All very similar in in specs. Just depending on the weight the contractor needs would be the machine that you would go for.
00:01:09:26 - 00:01:10:14
Jordanne Waldschmidt
And.
00:01:10:14 - 00:01:21:06
Andrew Sieker
They are similar. There are three tons there 24.4 horsepower. So what should a contractor think about when they're choosing between these models? What are some of those key differences between them.
00:01:21:07 - 00:01:41:16
Andrew Sieker
So the 30 and the 34 are going to be very similar with with specs and dig depth and things like that. When you get to the 38 you have a few more options. So say like the six way blade and the long arm is standard on the 38 rather than the short arm. Short arm is available on that one as well.
00:01:41:23 - 00:01:56:14
Andrew Sieker
Excellent. Well, let's take a look behind these panels. I'd love to know more about some of the key design decisions that case has made when it comes to maintenance and serviceability and reliability. Good.
00:01:56:16 - 00:02:21:19
Andrew Sieker
So yes, the panels are they open up wide so you can get to all your daily checks. So your engine oil is here, your air filters here, coolant and coolant gauge there. And then on the back side is where your fuel and your hydraulic wheel checks are. Again sight gauges to make it very easy to see a quick glance that everything's good to go.
00:02:21:20 - 00:02:25:19
Andrew Sieker
And what type of engines and transmissions have you guys put in these machines?
00:02:25:19 - 00:02:30:13
Andrew Sieker
These are Kubota engines to help with parts commonality and things like that.
00:02:30:13 - 00:02:35:00
Andrew Sieker
And let's talk service intervals. What are the service intervals on these excavators?
00:02:35:01 - 00:02:46:20
Andrew Sieker
Engine oil and filter every 250 hours. Hydraulic will thousand hours and coolant 2000 hours.
00:02:46:22 - 00:02:48:11
Andrew Sieker
All right. We've moved around to the back.
00:02:48:11 - 00:02:53:11
Jordanne Waldschmidt
Of the machine. Any other ease of maintenance features that case has baked into these models?
00:02:53:11 - 00:03:06:05
Andrew Sieker
Yes. To get into the belly of the machine, there are two bolts here. So lay the boom forward, the cab lifts up, and you can get down into the belly of the machine to do any service work or repair anything that is underneath there.
00:03:06:06 - 00:03:08:05
Jordanne Waldschmidt
Awesome. That's on super convenient.
00:03:08:06 - 00:03:10:17
Andrew Sieker
Very.
00:03:10:19 - 00:03:18:14
Jordanne Waldschmidt
So these cabs have been described as having an automotive style feel. What does that mean for operators who are spending all day in the seat here?
00:03:18:14 - 00:03:40:23
Andrew Sieker
So it's all about ergonomics and making things easy to get to as possible. You know, when your lights, your joystick for your blade, even your throttle and ignition key are very easy to get to. As you see on the floor, there are no pedals to swing your your boom. It's all done with your left hand, with your index finger.
00:03:40:23 - 00:03:47:25
Andrew Sieker
So they tried to make it as easy as possible for somebody who is sitting in eight, ten, 12 hours a day.
00:03:47:26 - 00:03:52:18
Jordanne Waldschmidt
And obviously we've got the open RoPS model here. But do you guys have cab versions as well?
00:03:52:19 - 00:04:10:09
Andrew Sieker
Absolutely. Cabs with HVAC as well. And the front window actually I wish I had one here, but it folds up, it locks into the top window and it goes up in front, up above your head so that you have clear, unobstructed view out of the front of this machine.
00:04:10:10 - 00:04:14:04
Jordanne Waldschmidt
Yeah, I'm sure it makes it super easy to talk to other folks on the job side as well.
00:04:14:05 - 00:04:19:11
Andrew Sieker
Absolutely.
00:04:19:13 - 00:04:21:08
Andrew Sieker
Okay, so.
00:04:21:11 - 00:04:49:14
Andrew Sieker
Ignition, throttle. If you hit the center, it will auto idle. So if you have a coworker come up to talk to you, it will turn red and auto idle. The machine. This joystick here is for your blade. And your yellow button is the two speed travel. The red button on the front is the float for your blade, so if you're backfilling, you can float.
00:04:49:14 - 00:05:16:10
Andrew Sieker
You have to hold it to keep it in the float. That's what that is. Lights. Your LED lights are here on your joysticks. Your working joysticks here you have for attachments here with these rocker switches. This one here, another attachment. And the front on this left one is another rocker switch for your center pivot boom swing.
00:05:16:14 - 00:05:20:13
Jordanne Waldschmidt
Anything that we should know about the display here.
00:05:20:13 - 00:05:28:09
Andrew Sieker
So. It will show.
00:05:28:11 - 00:05:44:28
Andrew Sieker
Engine RPMs, hours, fuel temperature and any warning lights. If you're low on fuel oil pressure, battery, it'll show all of that on there as well.
00:05:45:00 - 00:05:57:24
Jordanne Waldschmidt
So we know excavators are only as useful as the tool attached to it. So what kind of attachments can this machine realistically run and what type of hydraulic options come with this machine as well.
00:05:57:24 - 00:06:18:05
Andrew Sieker
So hydraulic options, one way flow in two way flow are standard. And hydraulic couplers for those different attachments, whether it be a hammer a mulching head which with these machines you can get the mulching provision so that you can still operate your tracks and have full power to that mulching head. So you're moving and shaking all the time.
00:06:18:05 - 00:06:28:03
Andrew Sieker
So that is an option. Hydraulic couplers. They are plumbed standard. So really any attachment out there we're ready to go for awesome.
00:06:28:03 - 00:06:38:24
Jordanne Waldschmidt
And beyond the machine itself we know contractors are always really concerned about uptime. So what are some of the things cases done to make sure that these machines are always up and moving and making money?
00:06:38:25 - 00:06:39:12
Andrew Sieker
Sure.
00:06:39:13 - 00:07:03:06
Andrew Sieker
Just just back here, the guarding on on the cylinders just to help protect all of that stuff. But then also they have their telematics. The seven year advanced telematics is standard. So with the My Case app so they can see the machine, see the location, see all the engine vitals and all of that. So really making it a bulletproof machine.
00:07:03:07 - 00:07:06:04
Jordanne Waldschmidt
Awesome. Did I hear there was auto lubrication as well?
00:07:06:05 - 00:07:08:00
Andrew Sieker
There is auto lube as a.
00:07:08:07 - 00:07:09:25
Andrew Sieker
As an option. Correct.
00:07:09:25 - 00:07:15:27
Jordanne Waldschmidt
And for contractors who are interested in these machines, are these out in the wild yet? Can they get them from their local dealers?
00:07:15:28 - 00:07:19:25
Andrew Sieker
Yes, they are out in the wild. They're ready to be on your job site.
00:07:19:26 - 00:07:45:28
Jordanne Waldschmidt
Awesome. If you're shopping for a new mini excavator, hopefully this gave you a better idea of where the 36, 30 4D and 38 D fit and which one might be right for your business. Up next, we're sending it over to Ben Thorpe, who's taking a broader look at the mini excavator market and where these machines stack up against the competition.
00:07:46:00 - 00:08:00:05
Ben Thorpe
