What it’s like to drive Freightliner’s electric trucks

There’s little debate that we’re heading down a road toward some level of trucking electrification. What’s up in the air is how we’ll get there and just how far that road will take us. Freightliner‘s eCascadia – the electric version of the company’s long-haul flagship – boasts a range of 250 miles, so we know we can go at least that far right now.

But considering the average long-haul trucker will cover 550 miles in a day, the immediate prospect of an electric Class 8 seems as limited as its range. That’s why, in the interim, Daimler Trucks has honed its immediate attention on medium duty, where the truck is lighter, duty cycle shorter and the need to heap on heavy (and expensive) battery packs diminishes.

Mauldin intros the 1860, now its largest paver, alongside two other new Tier 4 models at World of Asphalt

Mauldin rolled out three new Tier 4 Final pavers at World of Asphalt, including its largest model, the 1860.

The 1860 replaces the company’s former largest paver, the 1750-C. One of the big differences between the two models is the 1860’s larger hopper size. It can handle 9.5 tons of material versus the 1750’s 7.5 tons.

Geared toward commercial applications, the larger hopper means paving more between loads, said Brandon Granger, Mauldin marketing specialist, during the show on February 12 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis.

Wacker Neuson debuts Series II skid steers, CTLs with cabs that tip fully forward for easy maintenance

At the recent World of Concrete show, Wacker Neuson launched four Series II large-frame skid steers and compact track loaders — the radial- lift SW24, vertical-lift SW28, radial-lift ST35 and vertical-lift ST45 — which will soon be in dealers’ inventories.

The models feature what Wacker Neuson calls “the only cab that fully tips forward with the loader arms down,” giving easy access to all maintenance components. The company says the loaders have an efficient layout that requires less time on daily service checks.

How the skid steer is staying relevant with lower costs, versatility and speed

Once an upstart, the now-venerable skid steer loader has been defending itself against newer rivals and has been doing so quite effectively.

There was a time when other compact equipment was steadily chipping away at skid steer market share. Compact wheel loaders and compact excavators stole what they could grab, and compact track loaders seemed ready to loot what was left. But in recent years the decline of the skid steer market share has stopped, and sales have been mostly flat. Not growing, mind you, but flat, and that’s seen as a triumph of sorts.

Ram unveils 2019 Chassis Cab trucks with new Limited model

Ram has unveiled its 2019 chassis cab models, saying the lineup will boast segment-leading towing capacity and Gross Combined Weight Rating.

The 2019 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cab trucks, which share exterior design elements with the recently unveiled 2019 Ram HD trucks, will be offered in four trim levels: Tradesman, SLT, Laramie and Limited.

They will be available with a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 or a 6.7L inline-six Cummins turbo diesel. Paired with the TorqueFlite 8HP75 eight-speed automatic on the 3500, and the Aisin AS66RC 6-speed transmission on the 4500 and 5500, the HEMI delivers 410 horsepower and 429 lb.ft. of torque.
