Dismantling of old Tappan Zee Bridge.New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has made good on his plan to make use of the old Tappan Zee Bridge after it was dismantled. He announced that New York has begun building the first of 12 artificial reefs in the waters off Long Island using old bridge parts, the National Post reports.
This first artificial reef will be constructed approximately 2 miles from Shinnecock Inlet and will use 885 tons of bridge sections. It will cover approximately 35 acres in 85-foot-deep waters off Long Island’s South Shore.
Cuomo announced the reef project in mid-April 2018, saying it would boost the region’s recreational and sport fishing industries. The state plans to build six additional reefs in 2018, including five off the South Shore and one off the North Shore. Barges are being used to transport the bridge sections down the Hudson River and out to the reef sites.
