Photo courtesy of ADOT.The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is using a temporary bridge to keep Interstate 10 open while renovating the Wilmot Road overpass in the Tucson area. The $4 million project will replace the bridge decks in both directions and extend the life of the bridge.
The two-lane temporary bridge, which is located in the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes, began carrying eastbound I-10 traffic the last week of May. When work on the eastbound bridge is completed, hopefully in August 2018, east bound traffic will return to using the regular bridge and westbound traffic will be diverted to the temporary bridge.
“Using a temporary bridge allows us to extend the life of this bridge while causing the least possible delay for Pima County drivers,” says Rod Lane, district engineer for ADOT’s South Central District, in a press release.
This is the second time a temporary bridge has been used by ADOT to make bridge improvements without closing freeway lanes. It was first used during the Craycroft Road bridge renovation. Work is expected to be completed by December.
