Behold the 1966 Stout 1900: Toyota’s first pickup model had a whopping 85 HP

Updated Nov 11, 2016

In our coverage of Toyota’s super-fast Land Speed Cruiser SUV unveiled at last week’s SEMA show in Las Vegas, we mentioned that the Japanese automaker’s booth was full of first generation models from each of their product lineups. And just a few feet away from the 2,000-horsepower Land Speed Cruiser, was a pickup with about 1/25th of the power: the 1966 Toyota Stout 1900.

This vintage half-ton truck is the second model year of Toyota’s very first pickup. According to Toyota, the two-door Stout “was marketed as a tough work truck that could cruise and handle like a passenger car.”

However, it’s 1.9-liter, 4-cylinder inline OHV engine only produced 85 hp, good for a top speed of 80 miles per hour. And while half-ton trucks from Ford and Chevy at the time were producing between 135 and 200 hp thanks to V6 and V8 engines, the Stout’s $1,760 price tag was hard to beat.

The Stout’s weather-tight cab could hold three people, had an adjustable driver’s seat and a 4-speed gearshift. It was a short-lived model, however, only sold in the U.S. between 1965 and 1967 when it was replaced by the Hilux. Check out the photos in the gallery above.
