General Motors Co. says it will recall 370,000 full-size 2014 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras in order to reprogram software that could cause exhaust components to overheat, potentially causing engine fires.
The problems is often is signaled by a continuous yellow “check engine light” and an “engine power reduced” message in the driver information center, GM says adding that eight fires has been confirmed from this problem.
GM expects to mail recall notices Jan. 16, and says the repair will take approximately 20 minutes. Until the problem is corrected, GM urged customers to avoid leaving trucks to idle unattended.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, GM is expected to recall about 303,000 trucks with 4.3-liter and 5.3-liter engines in the U.S. The balance is made up of trucks exported across North America.
Trucks with 6.2-liter engines are not part affected.
