
Japanese roadbuilding equipment manufacturer Sakai has launched its next-generation SV544-1 vibratory soil compactors with a more powerful, fuel-efficient engine.
The 84-inch single-drum soil compactor lineup caters to large-scale site preparation and surpasses the previous SV544 series with its 148-horsepower F3.8 Cummins engine. This represents a 14% horsepower increase from the previous series’ engine and 8% greater fuel efficiency.
Peak torque has risen 23% from the previous series to 443 pound-feet and delivered at 100 fewer rpm. Engine noise has also been reduced, and carbon-dioxide emissions will be 8.2% lower, thanks to the Cummins Single Module aftertreatment system, Sakai says.
Contractors can choose from four configurations for the SV544-1 series:
- The SV544D-1 Smooth Drum Soil Compactor
- The SV544T-1 Padfoot Soil Compactor
- The SV544TB-1 Padfoot Soil Compactor with Blade
- The SV544TF-1 Smooth Shell Soil Compactor
Operating weights range from 24,405 to 30,335 pounds. All come standard with selectable traction control for forward slope and reverse slope operation and two-range vibration for high and low amplitude. The SV544-1 features a drum isolator mounting system and floating deck to reduce vibration on operators. The roller can climb up to 63% grade.
Sakai also highlights the SV544-1’s cab control layout, with physical switches and knobs instead of touchscreen, for simpler operation and reduced learning curve. An ECO mode reduces fuel consumption.

Key options include a bolt-through design smooth shell kit, an enclosed cab, a hydraulic leveling blade, an LED work lights kit, a suspension seat, a locking DEF cap and a fire extinguisher.
The SV544-1 Series is fully assembled at Sakai’s facility in Adairsville, Georgia.
