Caterpillar is unlocking several new safety features on its asphalt rollers with the addition of its Cat Detect – Collision Mitigation System.
The system features an integrated, intelligent sensor array to provide:
- Forward and Reverse Collision Warning: Depending on the direction of travel, the radar system sends a visual alert and audible alerts of increasing intensity as an object gets closer to the machine.
- People Detection: Using cameras, the system can differentiate people from objects and alert the operator when someone enters the machine’s hazard zone in the front or rear. Alert levels dynamically adjust based on the travel speed and person’s proximity to the machine.
- Motion Inhibit: When the roller is stationary for at least 2 seconds, Motion Inhibit automatically prevents gear engagement if the system identifies an object with collision potential, like a tipped-over cone. Once the object is cleared, the roller will be allowed to travel in forward or reverse. Manual override of the system is available with a switch located on the propel lever.
- Automatic Emergency Braking: When the compactor is in motion and critical-zone detection occurs, Automatic Emergency Braking activates if the operator fails to act. It also will turn off the vibratory system and will not critically stop the compactor in a way that would leave a bump in the asphalt. When the critical-zone detection clears, compactor control returns to the operator.

“The safety events are monitored, so Cat Connect will see most of these,” said Brian Downing, sales support consultant for Caterpillar Paving. “In addition, whenever the emergency braking system works, there is an option to have a video clip sent off with that.”
Cat Detect – Collision Mitigation System for Asphalt Compactors is slated for launch by midyear.
