Workers at the the construction site of One World Trade Center installed the first piece of the building’s spire on January 15, the AP reported. Once the spire is complete, the 104-floor skyscraper will be the tallest in the Western Hemisphere.
The nearly 70-ton piece arrived in Manhattan on December 12. It’s the heaviest of 18 parts that will top the 1,776-foot One World Trade Center.
The 800-ton, 408-foot spire will feature a beacon at its peak and will serve as a world-class broadcast antenna, providing public transmission services for television and radio broadcast channels that were destroyed on September 11, 2001, with the twin towers.
The skyscraper, which will overlook the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, is scheduled to open for business in 2014.
