Komatsu has launched an update to its PC138USLC excavator, a tight tail swing radius model aimed at highway, utility and other jobs in confined spaces.

The PC138USLC-11 is powered by a Tier 4 Final Komatsu SAA4D95LE-7 engine that provides a 4-percent decrease in fuel consumption. The engine employs selective catalytic reduction technology (SCR) and a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and requires no diesel particulate filter or regeneration.

The machine’s contoured cab design and sliding door allow the cab to swing within the radius of its large, 7,630-pound counterweight.

“The PC138USLC-11 is the perfect machine for contractors on highway, bridge and other roadwork jobs,” says Kurt Moncini, senior product manager, Komatsu America. “It’s easy to transport, versatile and the tight tail swing fits easily within one lane of traffic.”

On this updated model, Komatsu has improved the hydraulics to include technology that allows the machine to match engine speed and hydraulic pump output to the job at hand. Also new are a temperature controlled viscous fan clutch for reducing sound levels and parasite load on the engine, along with six working modes (P, E, L, B, Att-P, Att-E).

Those working modes are complemented by energy-saving guidance displayed on a new LCD monitor inside the cab. Operators can store information on up to 10 attachments in this new monitor, with adjustable flow control. The monitor also displays Komtrax telematics data, which includes vital machine info along with alerts for maintenance and upcoming service needs.

The updated cab also includes a new high back, heated, air-ride seat along with two 12-volt power port and an auxiliary jack for connecting your iPod or smartphone to the audio system.
