Though it doesn’t appear to be available for purchase quite yet, word is already spreading about the unique design of Ridgid’s new LED work light, the $99 R8694820B.

The design, which looks like a buoy, gives the light the same ability as Fisher Price’s Weebles toys. According to Stuart Deutsch, who has written up an excellent preview of the light over at ToolGuyd, the light is “weighted with a strong bias at the very bottom of the base.” Thanks to the lights curved sides, if it gets knocked or dropped it will “always try to right itself to a perfectly vertical position.”

The light can be powered by one of Ridgid’s 18-volt batteries, or it can be plugged in using an extension cord. The light also features a knob for lowering or increasing the LED’s brightness up to 1,000 lumens. If you opt for one of the batteries, it can power the light for 75 hours, but only at the lowest brightness level.

Ridgid is clearly aiming this model at the Wobblelight, another self-righting area light from Probuilt. That company offers both a 36-inch work light boasting 8,600 lumens and a 27-inch model with 7,500 lumens.

Deutsch says he is still putting the Ridgid light through some tests before he releases a final review, but notes that he is impressed by how widespread and even the light’s upward illumination is and “how well it can illuminate a higher-up work zone.”
