Deere’s new 850 X-Tier dozer boasts more power, torque and productivity than the 850L it was modeled after, thanks to its diesel-electric E-Drive system and more standard technology.
Equipment World got a closer look at the dozer earlier this year at Deere’s 2025 Construction Field Days customer event in Sacaton, Arizona. Take a walkaround of the 51,313-pound, 225-horsepower earthmover in the video above with Deere product consultant Cory Brant.
A dual-path electric drive transmission replaces the dual-path hydrostatic transmission with a generator and two electric motors, one at each track, giving operators improved performance, control and fuel efficiency when moving large loads of material. Multiple operating modes allow operators to tailor performance and fuel consumption to the specific jobsite.
Brant says Deere sought to reduce machine complexity, moving from a two turbo 9-liter engine down to a one-turbo system and from a two-canister DPF aftertreatment system to a single in-line canister. These design changes enabled Deere to lower the hood line, providing enhanced visibility out of the front of the dozer, in addition to a 5% improvement in fuel economy and increased low-end torque.
The cab features operator comfort and safety enhancements, including 14% more glass area, ergonomic controls and Deere’s Advanced Vision System with multiple cameras for surround and overhead views of the machine.
The dozer comes loaded with technology designed to enhance productivity for both new and seasoned operators. Features include:
- EZ Grade – Automates blade movements and corrects for changes in the machine’s pitch. EZ Grade runs in the background using the chassis and C-Frame IMU and is included with EH controls.
- Slope Control (Included in SmartGrade Ready) – Entry-level grade control system that assists operators in grading, allowing the operator to view and set blade slope while the system automatically controls the blade to maintain desired slope in the G5 Plus display.
- SmartGrade Ready, including 2D Grade Control – The 12-inch G5 Plus touchscreen display comes standard, allowing for plug-and-play 2D laser with no additional software needed. The dozer is pre-wired with all necessary harnesses, making it easy to upgrade to full 3D with a field kit.
- SmartGrade – John Deere’s 3D Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) grade control system integrates harnesses and components into the dozer, eliminating the need for external masts and harnesses.
