MTU America introduced its Power Drive Unit and unveiled plans for its new Sulfur Tolerance Solution at ConExpo-Con/Agg.

The MTU Power Drive Unit houses all engine parts for a variety of machines, including rock crushers, road paving, cranes and more. The unit can mount onto a trailer or other equipment and be transported to the jobsite, says James Krueger, senior application engineer for Construction, Industrial & Agricultural Engines at MTU America.

The unit has everything that needs the be attached to the engine, Krueger says, and simplifies connections by allowing the customer to work with no loose components.

The Power Drive Unit features an electronic panel, and the unit can be integrated with the equipment, says Krueger.

Krueger notes that the company continues to carry all its loose engine parts as well, noting that loose engine parts may be more suitable for some companies, while others may prefer the Power Drive Unit.

The manufacturer also showcased its full line of engines at the show, including the Series 1500 in-line 6-cylinder engine with selective catalyst reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment, the Series 1000 with SCR, the Series 2000 and 4000 lines for heavy-duty mining applications, the MTU Onsite EnergySeries 1600 Generator Set and more. All of the engines on display are in production.

Additionally, MTU America plans to offer a Sulfur Tolerance Solution that will allow customers to sell high-efficiency engines off-shore.

“Our strategy is to offer OEMs the ability to use our engines in the States then upload a software package that lets them use high sulfur content fuels,” Combs says.

The strategy would enable OEMs to use MTU engines in countries where ultra-low sulfur diesel  (ULSD) is not available. It is also designed to protect the engines from damage due to use of high sulfur fuel.

The solution will be available in mid-2014 for Tier 4 Interim MTU Series 900, 500 and 460 engines. The manufacturer anticipates offering the solution for its full lineup of Tier 4 Final-certified Series 1000 – 1500 engines at an undetermined date.
