The Georgia DomeAn interesting read from Sunday’s Atlanta Journal Constitution details a debate going on in the city over whether or not a new football stadium for the city’s NFL team the Falcons will serve as a true boost to the construction industry there.
Proponents of the new stadium, which would replace the aging Georgia Dome and is likely to cost upwards of $1 billion, say it could create as many as 30,000 new construction-related jobs in an area that badly needs them. The article quotes the Associated General Contractors of America as saying construction jobs in Atlanta fell 8 percent between August 2011 and August 2012.
However, there are those who believe while the new stadium may provide a quick boost, its benefits will quickly fade. And based on the one hotel and handful or restaurants located near Turner Field, where baseball’s Atlanta Braves play, these opponents even question whether restaurants, clubs and hotels/motels would pop up around the new stadium once it is completed.
