When you need to cut down a lot of vegetation quickly, a disc mulcher is just the tool for the job.
The hydraulic attachment for skid steers and compact track loaders can clear brush, woody vines and small- to medium-diameter trees at a high rate of speed for large-scale land clearing, site preparation and storm cleanup.
As the name implies, disc mulchers feature a push bar and a large, high-speed rotational disc that quickly topples and slices through vegetation and trees. Some models can cut below ground for stump and root removal.
While disc mulchers are generally faster and less expensive than a drum mulcher, they do not produce as clean or as fine of a finished product. Operators should also use greater caution with a disc mulcher due to the distance it aggressively throws debris.

Paladin’s new FD60 High-Flow Forestry Disk Mulcher is designed to reduce jamming while cutting through brush and trees, mulching and grinding stumps.
The mulcher features a wind-angle intake and a drive system that quickly recovers speed during cutting, the company says. A MulchPower Gauge shows when max rotational speed has been restored.
The FD60 is designed for felling trees up to 14 inches in diameter and can process those up to 8 inches. A dual-function push bar pulls trees in on the right side while grabbing trees on the left side. It can also grind stumps to grade.

Disc Mulcher Maintenance
Because disc mulchers are used in high-speed, aggressive land clearing applications, regular maintenance cannot be overlooked. Operators should perform the following service tasks daily:
Clean off any dirt or grease that has accumulated on the unit.
Check the wear of the blades and rotate them or replace them if necessary.
Check the hydraulic system for leaks or damage. Tighten it if necessary or replace any damaged parts. Ensure that the skid steer or compact track loader’s hydraulic system has enough oil.
Grease the fittings.
Check for any loose or missing hardware and replace it or tighten it if necessary.
Operators should also clean the air filter of the carrier machine according to OEM requirements.
