On Record – November 2009
I was having a casual hall conversation with a co-worker and we both agreed that when it came to readers, we’ve got one of the best audiences around. No offense against magazines that address the concerns of podiatrists or jewelers or convenience store owners, but as a writer, I’ll take one of our rooted, professional, […]

Kokosing recruiting workers in anticipation of stimulus boom
One of the biggest drags on the coming infrastructure stimulus package being proposed by President-Elect Obama will be the lack of workers to carry out these ambitious plans. Finding qualified labor was tough enough before the recession and housing market collapse, and despite last year’s layoffs it won’t be any easier this spring. So the […]

Granite sponsors career fairs
Sure we’re in the middle of a recession with 20 percent unemployment in the construction trades. That’s still no excuse for not recruiting. Even if you don’t have immediate job openings to offer, you need to keep tabs on who has potential for when the market does pick up. The best companies, Granite Construction included, […]

Hire a teacher for the summer
Sundt Construction in Tuscon, Arizona has started a summer internship to employ local teachers and show them what it’s like to work in the construction industry. There’s so much to like about this program I don’t know where to start. For Sundt, it’s smart because they get an intelligent, motivated employee, at the height of the […]

Today’s irony may equal tomorrow’s blessing
Alabama contractors can’t help but shake their heads at the irony. While it’s been estimated that the city of Birmingham alone has lost 4,000 construction jobs in the past 12 months, in October the state will start collecting a tax from contractors that will fund a construction employee recruiting campaign. But what seems odd now is something for […]

Workforce
Reporter
While double-digit construction unemployment figures have delayed its workforce marketing and recruiting initiative (see October 2008 Equipment World), the Construction Workforce Development Center is forging ahead with its Labor Supply /Demand Forecasting Model. CWDC is recruiting both owners and contractors to provide project and labor forecast information on its www.cwdcforecasting.com website, launched in January. “We’ve […]

Contractor of the Year Finalist: Tim Filiatreau, Filcon Construction
Tim Filiatreau’s farming background made going into construction a natural progression. He liked the outdoor nature of the work – “you couldn’t get me to work inside to save my soul,” he now laughs – and this affinity prompted his rise from shoveling dirt to general superintendent with a local construction firm. “I learned a […]

On Record: Add yourself to the mix
As part of our research into this month’s special report on workforce development, we surveyed selected readers on their practices and attitudes in this critical area. Frankly, some of the results were disheartening. When asked why construction has difficulty in attracting qualified people, 81 percent of our respondents said, “people don’t want to work hard […]

Cover Story/Special Report: Attracting the people you need
Sure, the general economic downturn – particularly housing’s depths – has dealt a hit to construction jobs. But even though the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 437,000 loss in construction employment over the 12-month period ending in July, the looming labor shortage is not going away. And with the needs of the booming […]

First Word: Get to know Generation Y
With baby boomers in construction retiring earlier than those in other professions, the urgency of attracting young workers to our industry is increasing. The first baby boomer began collecting Social Security retirement benefits in February – and an average of 10,000 per day over the next 20 years will be eligible to apply – but […]

First Word: Answering the call
Despite the housing slump, many sectors of the construction industry are facing a labor shortage likely to worsen significantly. Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America, says as many as 400,000 residential construction workers have switched to the nonresidential sector, resulting in nonresidential job gains of 10 percent over the past […]

Final Word: The myths of the operator shortage
In surveys contractors repeatedly cite the shortage of operators as their number one problem. But the reason it’s a problem for some contractors is that they continue to cling to a handful of myths about the situation and its solutions. Let’s look at these myths. Myth number one: there are not enough workers. With unemployment […]

Extreme Machine Makeover “When selling machinery on the Internet, appearance is everything,” says Jim Goodall, a 35-year construction industry veteran who sells used construction equipment online. Having trouble selling a Gradall telehandler in good mechanical condition that looked a little worse for wear, Goodall tried Dakota Shine, a biodegradable product for color and luster restoration.
