Volvo Construction Equipment has launched its DD30B and DD35B double drum asphalt compactors the company says can provide up to a 20 percent increase in fuel efficiency compared to previous models.

The new machines are designed for driveways, small paths, shoulders and patch jobs. They feature Volvo’s TwinLock traction control and torque transfer system which minimizes drum slippage on slicker surfaces or steep inclines.

“The DD30B and DD35B would be great additions to the fleet of any small contractor who does a mix of residential and light commercial paving work,” says Product Manager Bill Laing. “Their uncompromising power and fuel efficiency coupled with a range of productivity enhancing features make these the best compactors we’ve been able to offer in this size class to date.”

Volvo says the fuel efficiency boost is made possible by the Tier 4 Final 48.6 horsepower engine and the optional auto-idle feature that cuts engine speed when the operator does not activate the controls for five seconds.

The drum width for the DD30B is 49 inches, with the DD33B measuring 54 inches. Each edge of the drums are chamfered and rounded to minimize marking on the asphalt, and the machines feature an automatic variable interval water spraying system to help prevent asphalt pickup on the drums.

For operator comfort, Volvo designed the machines with “pillar-less” forward view and sloping hood design to improve visibility and unobstructed sightlines to the drum and spray bars. The seat also slides to help with visibility, and the controls on the two models are configured in the same layout as the company’s larger double drum compactors. Also aiding the operator is the hinged hood design that allows for ground-level access to engine maintenance points.
