Nautiz X1 offers a thinner option for rugged, military spec Android/Windows Embedded device

Nautiz X1 Ip67 Rugged Smartphone GloveRugged smartphones that meet military spec for durability aren’t known for their appealing design or their slimness. (See Casio’s GzOne Commando or Motorola’s i1) But the cool and most apparent thing about Handheld’s Nautiz X1 is that it eschews that complex.

It’s no iPhone 5 in terms of thinness, but at 15 millimeters thick, the Nautiz X1 is thinner than most devices that meet MIL-STD-810G military standards and it sports a black and white design that’s refreshingly easy on the eyes. When viewed from the front this looks like any other Android device wearing a case — except the X1 doesn’t need a case.

At only 6.3 ounces it’s pretty light for a military spec smartphone as well.

It’s a device that blends in well and that’s what Handheld strove for here. The company says it wanted to build what feels like a normal smartphone with the ability to survive humidity, vibration, drops and extreme temperatures. And with an IP67 rating, the X1 is fully waterproof and impervious to dust and sand.

Depending on which apps your team is using on the jobsite or the way you prefer to transfer data back in the office, the Nautiz X1 can be configured to run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5.

The device X1 runs on a dual-core 1 gigahertz processor and 512 MB of RAM, and comes with 2 GB of onboard storage space. Storage is expandable via a MicroSD card slot. The X1 boasts a 4-inch, 800Ă—480 touchscreen that Handheld says is sunlight-readable and scratch-resistant. On the back of the device is a 5-megapixel camera and LED flash.

Another cool feature of the Nautiz X1 is that it can be configured for both GSM (AT&T, T-Mobile) and CDMA (Verizon, Sprint) wireless carriers. And, it of course connects to 802.11 b/g/n WiFi networks. The 1530 mAh Li-Ion battery means you should be able to make through a full work day with ease.

Other features include, GPS, Bluetooth connectivity, 3.5-millimeter mic/earphone jack, and several accessories including a desktop cradle, an extended battery, a vehicle cradle and carry cases.
