The project involved replacing deteriorated concrete lanes with asphalt, with three lanes in each direction as well as auxiliary lanes. The roadway also includes new lighting, message boards, landscaping and ramp safety improvements.
Kiewit Infrastructure South was the prime contractor on the project, opening all lanes on July 2, one month ahead of the contract’s completion date.
Work began in 2018 on deconstructing and rebuilding the 7.6-mile corridor. The concrete surface was 10 inches thick, and 215,000 tons of crushed concrete were recycled. Crews then applied 300,000 tons of asphalt.
