Gov. Sam Brownback has named Richard Carlson acting secretary of the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and director of the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA). His appointment will have to be confirmed by the state senate.

Carlson has serviced as KDOT’s interim secretary since mid-July, following the resignation of Mike King from the secretary position.

“Richard Carlson brings both experience and a deep understanding of Kansas and its citizens to this position,” says Gov. Sam Brownback. “I appreciate his commitment to serving the state and know that he will be a strong and positive leader for KDOT.”

Carlson was in the Kansas state legislature for 10 years and prior to his interim secretary appointment served as legislative liaison for the Kansas Department of Revenue.

“I appreciate Governor Brownback’s confidence in my management abilities,” Carlson says. “I look forward continuing to oversee our outstanding Kansas transportation system, recognized as one of the best in the nation.”
