Step away from the cell phone!
New moves have been made in the Senate to take cell phones out of drivers’ hands, moves that might be more palatable to Congress than the blunt bill introduced by New York Senator Charles Schumer who wants federal funds withheld from states that don’t enact a ban.
Senators John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va) and Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) — who have worked together before to initiate changes to transportation legislation — are getting together to push the idea of a ban, with incentives as well as penalties, on using cell phones while driving according to a story in the L.A. Times. The aim is not only to end texting while driving but to make it illegal to use a hand-held cell phone while at the wheel.
