Doosan’s new 19-ton DX170LC-5 crawler excavator is designed for easier hauling from job-to-job by reducing the need for a special transport permit, the company says.

Doosan had small to mid-size contractors in mind when adding the new model, which is geared toward handling such jobs as residential basements and commercial-building footings.

With a weight of 38,376 pounds and its narrow width of 8 feet 5 inches, the excavator can be hauled with a Class 7 truck and trailer and still result in a combined gross vehicle weight rating of less than 80,000 pounds, according to Doosan. (The company recommends owners check local requirements, as those governing load weight, width, length and height vary by state.)

“We felt it was very important to offer a model in this size class to ensure our excavating customers could minimize transportation costs, while retaining the performance they expect from Doosan excavators,” says Aaron Kleingartner, Doosan Infracore North America marketing manager.

As with its other dash 5 models, the DXL170LC has four work modes – digging, breaker, shear and lifting – that can be engaged with the turn of a dial.

Operators also have a choice of four power modes:

  • Power+ – for the fastest speed for loading trucks, top digging performance and extra power for digging in hard ground.
  • Power – for tough digging conditions and truck loading tasks.
  • Standard – balances fuel consumption for everyday digging, grading and lifting.
  • Economy – reduces fuel consumption for low-demand tasks and slows machine movement for extra precision.

The excavator comes standard with a rearview camera. A sideview camera is optional. Their views are visible on a 7-inch LCD screen mounted in the cab, and a split-screen feature provides simultaneous views from both cameras.

The 120-horsepower engine meets Tier 4 Final emission standards with a diesel oxidation catalyst, selective catalytic reduction and diesel exhaust fluid. The engine also uses a high-pressure common-rail fuel delivery system and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system.

The DX170LC-5 comes with a standard three-year subscription to the DoosanConnect telematics system for remote monitoring of machine location, hours, fuel usage, engine idle versus work time, error codes, and engine and hydraulic temperatures. Doosan dealers can use the system to respond to machine warning messages and alerts, troubleshoot machine issues, and send a field service vehicle for repairs and parts delivery.
