Volvo CE intros EC60E excavator for big and small jobs alike with 20% power boost (PHOTOS)

Typically, when it comes to compact excavators, manufacturers like to talk about how well these machines fit in on small jobsites. And while Volvo Construction Equipment certainly says the same about the new EC60E, they’re also pretty confident it can handle a fair share work on major projects as well.

As such, the company is positioning the new excavator as a one-size-fits-most machine. The mighty mini boasts sizable power, fuel efficiency and comfort upgrades that Volvo says place it in a “unique size class.”

Powered by a Volvo D2.6H Tier 4 Final engine producing 60 horsepower at 2,200 rpm, the EC60E boasts a 20-percent increase in power, Volvo says. Ted out force is rated at 6,470 lb.-ft., while breakout force is rated at 9,720 lb.-ft.

Plus, the machine implements a 10-percent increase in swing force and lifting capacity, all in a package that is 12,700 pounds and 6 feet, 4 inches wide. And that’s all in addition to an 8-percent boost to fuel efficiency. You can see full specs including reach, dump height and digging depth to the right.

The modes include Active, Normal and Soft.

Operators will also be pleased to find a larger cab. Volvo says the EC60E cab is 10-percent larger than its predecessor and allows for more seat travel and recline. The cab also includes a tray for smartphones, two power sockets, a cup holder and three storage spaces.

A 7-inch color monitor displays all machine information, including service intervals and the view from the rear-view camera. Grouped together with the monitor is a keypad with hot keys for pre-set functions.

In-cab air conditioning has also been improved and is now 10-percent more efficient and distributes air through six vents.

Visibility is improved as well thanks to Volvo’s use of thinner pillars and a larger glazed area.

Volvo says a wide range of attachments, breakers and buckets are compatible with the EC60E and can be quickly changed out.

The EC60E also offers automatic regens with three options: automatic, active and park. The system automatically removes particulate matter every 30 hours without interrupting operation or performance.
