Komatsu launches HM400-5 articulated dump truck

Komatsu HM400-5 articulated dump truckKomatsu has introduced its latest articulated dump truck, a 44-tonner with a redesigned dash control panel as well as a Tier 4 Final engine the heavy equipment manufacturer says reduces fuel consumption and operating costs.

The HM400-5 is powered y a Komatsu SAA6D140E-7 engine producing 469 horsepower. The engine uses Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to reduce emissions. Lower fuel consumption is achieved through an electronic control system which manages airflow, fuel injection combustion parameters and after treatment functions. A variable geometry turbocharger and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) allow for precise temperature and air management control.

The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The truck has a gross weight of 165,633 pounds.

The truck features a low 10 1/2-foot loading height Komatsu says “easily matches” with 40-60 ton hydraulic excavators and 5.5-7.5 cubic yard wheel loaders. The truck has a dump angle of 70 degrees and features Economy and Power modes allowing the operator to customize performance to the application.

Further optimizing operation is Komatsu’s Traction Control System which sends power to all three axles, providing better traction when soft ground conditions are detected. The system allows four independent brakes to be applied if further slippage is detected.

Inside the cab, the new dash panel features easier to reach switches. The cab also features a a heated, high-back, air ride seat with a three-point seat belt. Komatsu has also added two 12-volt ports and an auxiliary jack input for playing audio from a smartphone or MP3 player.

The operator also has access to a now-standard payload meter which displays the weight of the loaded material on a 7-inch monitor. The meter also signals payload weight to ladder operators through lamps on the exterior of the truck. The payload information is also transmitted to Komatsu’s Komtrax telematics service for remote monitoring.

The in-cab monitor also allows the operator to modify settings and view the truck’s operation history and check the maintenance schedule.

The HM400-5 is also equipped with Komatsu’s Equipment Management Monitoring System which monitors critical systems and assists in troubleshooting.
