Work has begun on the fourth phase of extending the Dallas North Tollway 13.7 miles, part of a $2 billion five-year transportation improvement plan.

The North Texas Tollway Authority reports that construction has started on a bridge to extend the tollway over U.S. 380 into Prosper, Texas.

“This project is the first step in an important northern expansion of the Dallas North Tollway,” said Elizabeth Mow, NTTA assistant executive director of infrastructure. “As the communities in Prosper and Celina continue to grow, the DNT will be a critical path for these drivers to where they need to go.”

In future projects, the tollway will be extended to FM 428 in Celina. The authority says the extensions will reduce traffic congestion in Frisco and Prosper. Environmental engineering work continues on that phase of the project.

NTTA says the tollway extension is part of its five-year, $2 billion capital plan for improvement and expansion projects across North Texas to reduce traffic congestion and handle the growing population.

The complete Phase 4 project will provide a link between downtown Dallas and growing areas in Colin, Denton and Grayson counties.
