JCB rolled out a new Dual Drive system for its backhoe loaders at PWX 2026, which allows operators to drive the machine from the excavator position, eliminating the need to rotate the seat to use the loader controls.
The new system further enhances productivity on JCB's 109-horsepower 3CX and 4CX models, released in 2025. JCB equipped the next-generation models with upgraded transmissions for improved road traveling performance, a new outer box dipper option for the excavator end and a redesigned operator-focused cab.

"Dual Drive is one of those innovations that immediately changes the operator experience," said James Gill, product manager at JCB North America. "For applications like trenching, ditch cleaning, utility installation and municipal maintenance, operators can now reposition the machine without leaving the excavator controls. It reduces downtime between digging cycles and helps crews accomplish more throughout the day."

Enhanced Productivity
During excavation, operators have traditionally needed to pause work to move the machine forward, rotating the seat and shifting from the excavator controls to the loader controls before returning to digging. Now, integrated drive and steering controls on the excavator end allow operators to advance along a trench line or work area without leaving their seat, reducing downtime between digging cycles.

Backhoe Market Pulse
New financed backhoe loaders sales in the U.S. dropped 1.8% to 2,058 units sold from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026, according to Fusable’s latest EDA equipment finance data.
JCB is the fourth-highest seller of backhoes, behind Cat, Deere and Case in the U.S. Its most popular model is the 49-horsepower 1CXT, with 106 new financed units sold during the period.
Both EDA and Equipment World are owned by Fusable.
