Quick Data is a snapshot of new and used backhoe sales trends from Fusable’s EDA equipment financing data and EquipmentWatch market trend and auction price reports.
While backhoe loaders are still prized by utility contractors and municipalities for their versatility and roadability, demand continues to steadily soften as compact machines capture a growing share of the market.
New financed backhoe loaders sales in the U.S. dropped 1.8% to 2,058 units sold from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026, compared with 2,095 units sold during the same period last year, according to Fusable’s latest EDA equipment finance data.
Backhoes are the eighth most popular machine category, accounting for just 1.4% of all new financed machines sold.
While Caterpillar maintained its position as the top seller of backhoes during the period with 36.6% market share, Deere continued to close the gap, rising to 34.6% of new financed units sold, a difference of just 41 machines. Case came in third with 17.8% of all new financed sales, while JCB, New Holland, Bobcat and Sany rounded out the rest of the pack.

Used financed backhoe loaders faced steeper declines, falling 6.1% to 2,768 units sold from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026, compared with 2,949 units sold during the same period last year. The share of the market for used backhoes also slipped from 3.8% to 3.4% of all units sold.
Deere, Case and Cat held their positions year over year as the top three sellers of used backhoes. Top-selling models for the period were the Deere 310SL, Case 580 Super N and Deere 310L.

Texas buyers snapped up the most used models, accounting for 16.9% of total units sold. Oklahoma added another 6.3%, and California and Missouri tied for the third position with 140 machines, or 5.1% of units sold.
EDA data is compiled from state UCC-1 filings on financed construction equipment. EDA continually updates this data as information comes in from each state.

Despite a recent uptick, used tractor loader backhoe prices have been steadily falling from their five-year high in the second quarter of 2024, according to Fusable’s EquipmentWatch market trend data.
The average price tag for a used backhoe was $75,731 in the second quarter of 2024, compared to $70,523 during the same period in 2026. The average age of used backhoes over the last 12-month period hovered between 8.9 and 9.8 years. The average age and price were calculated using 134,412 resale listings during the period in the EquipmentWatch database.
EquipmentWatch defines fair market value (FMV) as the monetary value of an asset that can be expected in a transaction with a single seller and single buyer, neither of whom is under any compulsion or time restriction to complete the transaction. FMV for heavy equipment is most closely associated with the private resale market, as opposed to the public auction market.
Backhoe Auction Prices
Looking at the top 20 backhoes sold for the 12-month period of June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026, in terms of auction price, Caterpillar accounted for half of the top 20 price spots. Deere came in second with seven units on the charts, while Case took the remaining three spots.
According to the EquipmentWatch auction price guide, the top auction price paid for a backhoe during this time was $111,000 for a 2024 Deere 320 P-Tier with 20 hours at a Resource Auction sale in Williston, North Dakota, on April 10, 2025.
