Charles Machine Works (CMW) veteran Kevin Smith has been tapped by the company to lead a new joint leadership team of the company’s Subsite Electroinics and HammerHead trenchless subsidiaries.
The promotion represents an expansion of Smith’s duties at CMW where he has worked for more than 25 years. Smith has been president of HammerHead since 2015 and worked his way up through the company from a salesman at Ditch Witch to president of MTI Equipment.
CMW CEO Rick Johnson says the move to have one president at the head of both HammerHead and Subsite, which both serve the underground utilities markets, to work more cohesively and share resources, while maintaining separate workflows.
HammerHead primarily offers solutions for the installation, replacement, and maintenance of underground utility pipe and cable. Subsite manufactures horizontal directional drilling (HDD) guidance equipment, utility locators, utility inspection systems, and equipment machine controls
“The Charles Machine Works approach is unique in the industry,” Smith said. “Our family of companies brings greater value to customers by working together. We share assets, expertise and insights that ultimately lead to customer-driven solutions across the full life cycle of the pipe. This offers our customers additional capabilities, letting them tap new avenues of revenue to continually grow their business.”
Smith’s new leadership team will include Randy Rupp, Brian Kenkel and Christi Woods.
Rupp has been named general manager for Subsite and has served as vice president of product strategy at Ditch Witch for the past four and a half years.
Kenkel is the new general manager for HammerHead and joined the company six years ago, most recently serving as director of repair and replacement. He has spent his career in the underground construction industry, including 10 years owning and operating a successful contracting company.
Woods is assuming an expanded role as controller of Subsite and HammerHead and has more than 20 years of experience working as a C.P.A. and small business entrepreneur.
