Joachim Creek Bridge. Google Earth screen shot.The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is offering to give away a Great Depression-era Jefferson County truss bridge that carries State Route 61 traffic across Joachim Creek, but there’s a catch, the Bristol Herald Courier reports.
The new owner will be responsible for maintaining the bridge or paying to have it moved, otherwise it will be demolished.
Joachim Creek Bridge isn’t the only bridge that’s up for grabs, MoDOT is offering more than a dozen others of different sizes, and several federal grants could pay up to 80 percent of the demolition costs available to reimburse anyone interested in using the bridge.
“It’s interesting, but it’s not something I’d want to do, own a bridge,” Sam Shelton, who lives near the historic bridge, told the news agency.
