Photo Credit: Louisiana Department of TransportationThe flooding in Louisiana August 12-14 led the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LDOTD) to close more than 280 state roads, as well as portions of Interstate 12 and I-10 in the Baton Rouge and Slidell areas.
At one point two main sections of I-12 were closed—eastbound between U.S. 61 and Louisiana 1026 and westbound between U.S. 61 and I-55. Portions of I-10 also were shut down—eastbound and westbound between U.S. 165 and I-49 and eastbound and westbound between Siegen Lane and Louisiana 73.
I-12 eastbound from I-10 in Baton Rouge to I-10 in Slidell was reopened the evening of August 15.
At least 11 people have died as a result of the flooding and more than 30,000 people have been rescued, with up to 10,000 people having to take refuge in shelters.
The LDOTD recommends motorists refrain from traveling during flood conditions, but to follow these safety tips if driving is necessary:
- Drive slowly and carefully.
- Avoid driving into standing or running water.
- Avoid driving while distracted.
- Avoid using cruise control when visibility is low or road surfaces are wet.
- Always allow for extra driving time.
- Make sure there is plenty of room between vehicles.
- Have your headlights on when using windshield wipers
