The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is seeking middle and high school registrants for its 17th Annual Statewide Model Bridge Building Competition, with a deadline of Nov. 20.

The final competition will be held in April next year, with preliminary reports and drawings for regional competitions being due in March.

The department holds the contest in order to “create a greater awareness of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education and its relationship to transportation careers provided by NCDOT.” The goal is to encourage students to be actively involved in constructing the project and applying mathematical concepts in their work, as well as develop communication and problem solving skills in a team environment.

NCDOT State Bridge Construction Engineer Kevin Bowen says the contest is about more than just building a model bridge.

“Its about education, communication, careers and service to the public,” he said in a statement. “We believe students will best experience tomorrow’s career opportunities by working with industry professionals to apply technical applications to today’s problems.”
