Web-based IRI Explorer (www.iriexplorer.com) uses data from the Federal Highway Administration’s Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) database to study the long-term impact of various pavement treatments on road smoothness. Life Cycle Solutions created the program with funding from the National Asphalt Pavement Association and the State Asphalt Pavement Associations.
Users can review historical data of different pavement sections, including International Roughness Index (IRI), and compare sections on a variety of factors including materials, maintenance, climate, and region.
The tool also offers an Emissions Estimator life-cycle assessment tool to estimate greenhouse-gas emission during road maintenance and construction, and during a road’s usage time.
“Life-cycle assessments are an important tool for gauging and quantifying sustainability,” said Meagan Sylvia, Senior Environmental Manager for The Lane Construction Corp., who consulted on the program. “IRI Explorer lets pavement owners better forecast the environmental impact of different maintenance and pavement preservation strategies.”
The Asphalt Pavement Alliance is hosting a webinar for the program April 29 at 3 p.m. eastern time. Registration is available at (www.AsphaltPavement.org/webinar).
