North Carolina is likely to begin using tolls to help fund state highway maintenance and expansions, according to The Daily News, Jacksonville.
North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Chief Deputy Secretary Nick Tennyson recently told attendees at a public information session that, in order to perform all the work that is necessary on the 80,000 miles of road in the state, it needs more revenue than the gas tax and highway fees provide.
The announcement follows a report released March that noted that value-added tolling, which adds tolls only when and where they are needed, would be more more beneficial to highway users than a gas tax hike.
In addition to considering implementing tolls, the DOT is seeking innovative solutions to highway repairs and preparing to advocate for a multi-modal plan.
