Polly TrottenbergNewly-elected New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has appointed U.S. DOT Under Secretary for Policy Polly Trottenberg as the city’s new transportation commissioner.
In her new role, Trottenberg will lead efforts to reach de Blasio’s goals “to expand Bus Rapid Transit in the outer boroughs, reduce traffic fatalities, increase bicycling, and boost the efficiency of city streets,” according to an announcement of the appointment on Transition NYC.
Trottenberg has worked in her DOT position since January 2013, and Streetsblog reports that her resume also includes federal policy making in the offices of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-New York) and Senator Chuck Schumer (D – New York).
The Streetsblog report notes that Trottenberg is well known for her work with TIGER grants and for giving official recognition to the progressive street design guidelines that the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) produced.
According to Politico’s Morning Transportation newsletter on Thursday, the DOT Under Secretary for Policy position will need a nomination from the White House and a confirmation by the full Senate before it can be filled.
