5 construction workers die from falls in 4-week span

hard hat fallen in dirtFive workers have died from falls on construction projects around the U.S. in the last month.

According to a report from NBC Los Angeles, a worker in the Westlake district of the city fell 28 feet to his death Nov. 17. LA West Media identified the worker as Oswaldo Mineros Jr., reporting that the 20-year-old fell from scaffolding onto a concrete pile in a pit on the jobsite.

That same day, 56-year-old Eugeniusz Klecha was killed by a fall from a home under construction in Staten Island, New York. According to a report from SILive.com, Klecha was not wearing a safety harness and no supervisor was on the scene at the time of the accident.

On Nov. 25, 29-year-old Luis R. Estrada was killed in an 11-foot fall on a jobsite in Carthage, Missouri, according to the Joplin Globe. Estrada fell from a three-sided box sitting on the forks of a tractor. He was employed by Mundo Hernandez Construction of El Paso, Texas, the Globe reported. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration opened an investigation of the incident.

And this past weekend, 46-year-old Chris Wayne Hulsey died from injuries he sustained Dec. 10 in a 16-foot fall from storage tanks in Cleveland, Georgia, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
