This time-lapse video by the Washington State Department of Transportation shows the tedious work that was involved in tearing down the Alaskan Way Viaduct, the double-deck concrete highway that stood for more than 60 years along Seattle’s waterfront.
Once the new tunnel was finished, crews started to carefully demolish the roadway in February 2019. The highway was taken down in sections to avoid damaging buildings that stood just a few feet away. Work progressed throughout the summer, and the last section of highway was brought down in September of that year.
