The latest survey conducted by the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) found that reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) were the top recycled materials in 2016.
According to NAPA, the report found that more than 31 percent of all asphalt pavement mixtures produced in 2016 used energy-saving warm-mix asphalt (WMA) technologies. In 14 states, more than half of all asphalt pavement mixtures were produced using WMA, and three of those states used more than 75 percent WMA.
The survey also found that more than 76.9 million tons of RAP and nearly 1.9 million tons of RAS were used in new asphalt pavement mixes in 2016, saving more than $2.1 billion compared to the use of virgin materials and nearly 50 million cubic yards of landfill space from reclaiming RAP alone.
