Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing enthusiasts will find it more difficult to get to a popular Colorado ski spot next year during peak snow due to road construction.
Work is scheduled to begin November 15 on Brainard Lake Road, which leads to the Brainard Lake Recreation Area.
The work on the $3.5 million project will close the road from March 1 through June 28, according to the Boulder County Transportation department. Periodic road closures will occur before March 1.
Starting November 15, closures will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Fridays. The road will be open weekends and Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
The construction project involves widening 2.5 miles of the road and adding a 4-foot shoulder in the westbound lane for safety, snow removal and to create a bicycle and pedestrian lane. The project will also add devices to slow drivers ahead of tight curves.
Though the road will be closed, the recreation area will remain open to those who access it by trail.
