The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has recognized four employees from its Equipment and Maintenance Division in Halifax County for their assistance during a house fine in late April.
The employees, Teresa Skinner, David Griffies, Thomas Jernigan and Keith Hurdle received the Extra Mile Award, an honor given to employees who “go above and beyond” their job duties.
Skinner observed the house fire while traveling on NC 125 on April 28 and called 911. Jernigan and Griffies stopped and helped the homeowner and pet dog leave the structure. Hurdle helped two volunteer firefighters by manning a hose. He also is chief of the Jackson Fire Department in Northampton County.
“All of these employees demonstrated a great willingness to go above and beyond in an emergency situation,” NCDOT Secretary Nick Tennyson says.
“Whether they are doing work for the Department of Transportation or other duties, they all showed professionalism,” says NCDOT Division 4 board member Gus Tulloss. “They also showed compassion to go back and get the gentleman’s pet dog out. I am proud of what they did and how they responded.”
